Digging Hill in Kaneohe Bay
Aloha Fellow Hikers!
If you're seeking a scenic hike that combines breathtaking views with a touch of local history, the Pu'u Ma'eli'eli trail in Kaneohe is a must-do. This family-friendly, dog-welcoming hike is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Oahu's windward side.
The Journey to the Pillbox
In Hawaiian mythology, Pu'u Ma'eli'eli, or "Digging Hill," is named after the legendary gods Kane and Kanaloa, who raced to the summit by digging into the slopes with their hands. The trail itself is a natural dirt path that can get muddy after rain, adding an extra layer of fun (or challenge, depending on your perspective). We recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes with good traction and bringing along walking sticks for added stability. Always check the weather before heading out, and be prepared for a little mud if it’s been raining.
Breathtaking Views Await
As you ascend, you’ll not only enjoy stunning views but also step back in time. The summit is home to bunkers, remnants of the He'eia Combat Training built during World War II to support nearly 4,500 military personnel stationed in the area. These structures served as a vital part of the island's defense and stand today as a powerful reminder of Oahu's military history.
At the top of Pu'u Ma'eli'eli, you're rewarded with panoramic vistas stretching from Chinaman's Hat (Mokoli'i) in Kualoa, across the serene waters of Kaneohe Bay, to the bustling town of Kailua, and beyond to Makapu'u. It’s a view that truly captures the diverse beauty of Oahu, from its rugged coastlines to its lush interior valleys.
The historic concrete bunkers provide the perfect spot to take a break, snap some photos, and soak in the incredible scenery.
Before You Leave... Take a Peek
If you're curious like us... take a peek & climb into the bunkers. From there, you'll see a slightly different view.
Hiking with Aloha

Please pack out all your trash, stick to the marked paths to protect the delicate ecosystem, and always respect other hikers. Leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but memories.
