Oahu's Best Kept Secret: Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail
Aloha Fellow Adventurers,
If you're on the lookout for a distinctive hiking experience in Oahu, let us guide you through the Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail—situated in the exclusive Waialae Iki neighborhood, this trail is not just a trek but an immersion into breathtaking scenery and tranquil luxury. One of the easier ridge hikes on the east side of Honolulu, this trail overlooks the Koolau Mountain ranges and sweeping ocean views.
Connecting with Nature
The trail stretches approximately 4.5 miles round trip. It’s a moderately strenuous hike that rewards those looking for both physical challenge and a chance to connect with Oahu’s rich ecological and cultural heritage.
A hiking trail popular among the locals, you'll bound to meet fellow hikers & four-legged doggie friends too.
Take your time and enjoy the scenery, you're in for a treat!
How to Get There
Access to this hidden gem is through the upscale gated community of Waialae Iki, where you'll be met by a security guard up Laukahi Street. It’s crucial to show respect here: adhere to parking regulations, keep noise levels low, and ensure you leave no trace behind.
What to Expect on the Trail
Prepare for a mix of conditions including muddy patches, steps, and ropes for assistance on steeper sections. Hold on tight to the ropes even if you think you don't need them. As the conditions can be slippery when wet, we've caught ourselves accidentally slipping and could have fallen off the cliff without the ropes. Safety at all times.
As you ascend, you'll traverse areas rich with local flora and encounter spots perfect for catching your breath and taking in the views. Make sure to bring snacks, enough water & sunscreen. The trail can be quite hot on sunny days as there are no tree shelter.
The Reward: Panoramic Vistas
From the ridge, the panoramic views are simply stunning. You can gaze out over the east side of Oahu, including Hawaii Kai and Waimanalo, and even catch sight of the windward side, featuring Kailua, Kaneohe, and the distinctive peaks of the Lanikai Pillbox & Olomana hikes. These vistas offer an unique look at Oahu's diverse landscapes—from urban enclaves to lush, green mountains and the azure Pacific Ocean.
The Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail offers more than just a hike; it’s a journey through some of Oahu’s most spectacular landscapes, wrapped in the exclusivity of the Waialae Iki community -- home to Hawaii's former Governor Ben Cayetano & the Netflix special "Terrace House -- Aloha State". Whether you're a seasoned hiker or someone seeking a peaceful retreat from the city, this trail promises a fulfilling adventure filled with the spirit of aloha. Lace up your hiking boots and get ready to explore one of Oahu’s best-kept secrets!
