Made in Hawaii

Lavahut - Made in Hawaii - Hanauma Bay

How it all began...

Alongside local Hawaiian coffee, ono bean-to-bar chocolates, dried nuts like macadamia & homegrown papayas & pineapples, Hawaii is also home to the Aloha Shirt.

Known locally as Aloha Shirts, Hawaiian Shirts in the mainland, the first shirt was made by a Chinese merchant in the 1930s. Mr. Ellery Chun's Aloha Shirts were a big hit with local islanders, surfers and tourists.

Within years, major designer labels sprung up throughout Hawaii and helped feed the Aloha Shirt craze. Celebrities like Frank Sinatra & Elvis Presley endorsed these Hawaiian creations in the 1960's. Over the years, movie stars like Tom Selleck in Magnum P.I., Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Nicholas Cage in Raising Arizona & Leonardo diCaprio in Romeo + Juliet could be seen wearing Hawaiian Shirts in their movies. Not forgetting, Al Pacino in Scarface & did we mention Jeff Cohen in The Goonies (boy, do we love that movie!)?

From this humble beginning, the popularity of the Aloha Shirt waterfall to floral Hawaiian dresses & island-inspired family clothing. Hawaiian clothing now available in all styles imaginable and for children, adults and anyone who wants to wear Hawaii.

Symbol of Hawaii...

Just hearing the word Hawaii brings an emotive feeling of relaxation, enjoyment, well-being and being on island care-free time. You start visualizing the beautiful sunset glowing throughout the horizon, feel the salty breeze blowing through your hair and hear the no-worries tunes of a ukulele being played in the distance.

Hawaii is a feeling, a place and so much more. Hawaii is a place surrounded by beautiful coastal beaches & tropical flora. Hawaii is a culture and a way of life filled with friendly smiles & warm hellos. Hawaii began with the brave Native Hawaiians who started it all with their oceanic voyages from Polynesia. From places like Samoa, Tonga and even as far as New Zealand.

And thus, the Aloha Shirt born and created in Hawaii is symbol of all this, evoking the spirit of Hawaii through its scenic & floral imagery. Spreading the love of Aloha all while wearing a piece of Hawaii.

Made in Hawaii, of course...

Once upon a time, Aloha Shirts were made only in Hawaii. Today, you can find many copycats or faux Hawaiian wear which are produced cheaply in Asia or sold under big name brands such as Tommy Bahama, Topshop or Ted Baker London, which has no connection to the Hawaiian islands.

The clothing Lavahut offers are all made in Hawaii and nowhere else. From the initial design to the final fabric cut, each Hawaiian dress & shirt is finished with quality stitches sewn by professional seamstresses in Honolulu, Hawaii.
