Trail to Makapuu Lighthouse

Driving to Makapuu is already beautiful, the relaxing stroll up the trail is the cherry on the top.

The Makapuu Lighthouse Trail has recently been renovated by the State of Hawaii, the sidewalks are wide & paved and there's scenic viewing spots dotted along the trail.

A popular hike for both locals & tourists, it's actually one of our favorite spots. The view is spectacular all around & the best part? It's dog-friendly too!

As you make your way up the most southeastern tip of Oahu, you're surrounded by the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean and the gentle slopes of Koko Crater.

Midway up the hike, brand new telescopes have been installed for whale watching... These are free, so take a peek :)

Lavahut - Makapuu Trail Hike - Whale Station

Humpback whales make their annual migration to Hawaii around December to May. If you see people pointing out to sea in excitement, it's most likely a whale coming up for air or waving us "Aloha" with their tail.

After your brief break at the whale-watching station, continue onward to another breath-taking look-out. This one overlooks Rabbit Island and Kaohikaipu Island State Seabird Sanctuary.

Keep your eyes open for the bright red lighthouse stationed on the very tip of our island's coastline. And here's a fun little trivia... The Makapuu Point Lighthouse has "the largest lens of any lighthouse in the United States". (Source: Wikipedia)
